"The two chairs sit with each other representing my great aunt sitting with my mother on her knee. Each chair only has two legs and so cannot stand on its own, yet when they sit together, they are a strong unit, supporting each other. The character of each chair is shown in the design of the back, as the young maple chair features a short, contemporary, simple back of straight slats whereas the elder walnut chair features a taller, more traditional back of turned spindles."
